The Call of the Wild. 2020 (Cinema) WORTH ANSWERING THE CALL? My first initial thoughts on this movie were 'Indiana Jones with a dog?' However that was not the case and this tells the story of Buck, a larger than life family pet who suddenly finds himself as a sled dog in the middle of the Yukon. The big talking point for Call of the Wild is in fact the CGI used on our main character Buck. I actually feared going into the movie that this was going to be a hindrance but surprisingly, that was not the case. With me not being a big fan of CGI unless done right, I ended up getting straight on board with it somehow and at times, I didn't even notice it was a digital dog! However there are some downsides to it and this mainly occurs when there are a few animals on screen at once. It starts to become very noticeable in these parts and a bit of an eyesore. Did you really have to use CGI for every animal in the movie? Locations look fantastic though with some really sweet cinematography so there is a fine balance with the look of this movie if you consider it as one. With all that out of the way The first two acts of this film were fantastic. It was great to travel along with Buck on his adventures and the movie told quite a fascinating story. Harrison Ford is introduced into the third act as John Thornton but this is unfortunately where the movie goes downhill for me. This is not down to Ford it's just the way the story made a sharp turn and became a bit less interesting. I think it had a hard time trying to say what it wanted to say and found it awkward to wrap up Bucks tale. Plus there was hardly any character growth or backstory for Thornton, he just felt like he was there. This is still a decent family film for the most part though and definitely one for all dog lovers. Fun Fact: Buck was a digital scan of a dog that director Chris Sanders' wife adopted during pre- production. Best Moment: When Buck decides to lead the pack of sled dogs. Best Quote: Francoise (to Buck) "I never saw him believe in anything as much as he believes in you" Score: 6.5/10 VIDEO REVIEW IN BIO
